Last night, we noticed that Josh, our rabbit was even quieter than usual. As he has arthritis, he has trouble cleaning himself, so we sometimes have to clean him up a bit. We lay him on his back to do this. Usually when we're finished, he fights to get back the right way, but last night he didn't even try. I was able to hold him like a baby on his back.

This morning we found him spread out across the floor barely moving. He was still alive, but I decided not to go into class today and stay with him. Since then, Josh has started having little fits; his paws are often quivering.

My mum called up a short while ago to see how he was doing, and we both agreed that the most humane thing to do was to take him to vets once she gets home from work.

I got Josh shortly after my 8th birthday; he was 8 weeks old. He's now 11 and 4 months. Rabbits don't usually live longer than 8 years, so I know he's had a good life. It still hurts deeply though, I'm going to miss him so much.

Review of season 1 of Star Trek: Deep Space 9

Immediately you can see that there is a significant difference between DS9 and the previous two Star Trek series; not only has the setting changed from a starship to a space station, but the relationships between characters are dramatically different. The main characters aren't all outstanding members of Starfleet; they don't all have the same political interests, which creates tension among the characters. I like the division the have and the lack of trust that is shown all the way through season one, as they get used to one another.
I thought the premiere episode 'Emissary' was a big improvement on the TOS/TNG series pilots, not just visually, but in the sophistication of the story line and plot. I liked how TNG passed the torch onto DS9 with the guest appearance of Picard and the permanant transfer of O'Brien. You feel sympathy for Picard when Sisko is so cruel towards him, because you know it was not Picard's fault, but at the same time, you can totally understand Sisko's anger and would probably react the same way if you were in his position.
A lot of people criticised how they tried to inccoperate TNG characters into DS9, such as with 'Q-Less; granted, Q and Vash did not work in that environment, but unless you try, you never know. And if they didn't try, we never would have had that wonderful line 'Picard never hit me'. 'The Forsaken' also did the same thing, by bringing Lwaxana in, but that worked perfectly. The interaction between Odo and Lwaxana was wonderful.
For the first season, I think there were some very strong episodes, such as 'Progress', where we really get to explore Kira's character and see how split she feels. The best episode for me, however, has to be 'Duet'. Another Kira episode that dealt with classic trek issues such as prejudice and justice.
There were a few flops as well, 'If Wishes Were Horses' being the worst of them; it story seemed pointless and predictable and reminded me of something you might have got from TOS.

My Snow White DVD came in the post today. Yay! It came with a film cell from the movie, which is really neat.

I was even happier to get my ticket to a Charmed talk at this month's convention. I was worried that it wouldn't arrive in time because of the postal strikes. I'm number 19, which means I'll be something like the 4th row :D.

Receiving them was not without incident though. As it was only casuals posting today, they didn't do the job properly. The ticket was special delivery and meant to be signed for. Not only did he not ask for it to signed for, but he put it inside junk mail leaflets. It was just luck that my mum happened to look inside them before throwing them away.

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?

My grandpa sometimes sings

'iny meany minie mo
catch a nigger by the toe
if he squeals let him go
iny meany minie mo'

I find it offensive even though it does not apply me, but I let it slide because I know he is not a racist person, it is just the time when he grew up that was a term used.

My other grandparents and dad often say 'coloured' rather 'black', again not intentionally being racist, but not realising that it is pc to say 'black'. My mum always corrects them on this and I do occasionally.

Something that I do find offensive is that any one of them might be talking about someone doing wrong and they will mention what colour they are is if that has something important to do with what they did. I usually comment on that, because I just think it's wrong.

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So ask me something you want to know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

Writer's Block: Go to the head of the class

When you take a class or attend a big meeting, where do you prefer to sit? Up close or way back where you can make a speedy get-away? Can you force yourself to focus even when you're not interested?

I sit where ever is closest to the door. Sometimes that's at the back, sometimes that's at the front.

How times change

tetris
I just went on to my old secondary school website to see what was going on, and boy have there been some big changes. Namely, my old Head Master, Mr. Shakespeare is no longer there. He's retired. It must have been pretty recently as I only left in 2006 and he was still teaching there in 2007. I was really shocked, because not only did he run the school, but he lived there, which means he would have had to have moved when he retired.

I'm kinda sad now - not that there's anything sad about retiring, that's a good thing, but it's just the change, it makes you think how quick time flies.

When I was there, they used to hold a reunion every 5 years. It was two years away until the next one, but now there's a new head, I don't know if there will be one or not. Even if there is, it would be weird as everything will have changed.

I wonder who else has left since I've been there.

Haven't posted in a while, so I thought I'd give an update.

A couple of weeks ago my mum saw this advert in the paper for a 12" Scully action figure. We phoned up the guy selling it and he said that he had loads of stuff he was selling because the family member who collected them had passed away. Anyway, he brought some of his stuff and we met at the train station. I bought 2 scully action figures, one Mulder figure, a map two trading cards that had pieces of shirt material worn by DD and GA.

Apparently he also has over 200 books which he's going to get more details on for me :D

Walking and Chestnuts

My dad, his friends and I went on a nature walk today; we were going through the woods and things. We were supposed to be following a trail, that my dad's friend was following on a map, but we got lost every five minutes lol.

As we went along, I spotted a chestnut on the floor, so we started doing a chestnut hunt. My dad and I collected 88 between us and we brought them home. When my mum got back from work we roasted them and had a major pig out on them. I feel stuffed. I wish I hadn't had pudding first.

Star Wreck

wtf
I went to uni today to take back some videos; while I was in town I went into a shop that trades in old dvds. I've been in there a few times and had seen season 1 of Stargate Atlantis in a slimline boxset. I was planning to take some dvds in today and get some money off the price, but when I got there, unfortunately the dvds had gone. I should have got them when I first saw them instead of uhming and ahhing about it.  I did, however, see the Star Trek parody 'Star Wreck'. I've seen bits and pieces of such comedies on the internet, but this is the first time I've seen it on dvd. Might not be SGA, but definitely a great find; gonna watch it tonight.

Market

There was a market in town this weekend.

We saw it yesterday when my dad and I when to the cinema to see 'District 9' (it sucked). After the film we wandered around the market; it was mostly French stalls, but there was one German stand selling hot dogs and frankfurters. My dad bought this big sausage in a bun there. We also bought a couple of small nut/honey pastries and dried fruit. The honey/nut things were so nice I went back today to buy more. Yummy! There was also someone selling freshly made paella. I would have got some yesterday, but the next batch wasn't going to be for another 20 minutes. Today I got some though and had half for my dinner - more yummy! Also got some dried strawberries and two sausages (garlic and boar).

Conquered the loft and surprise find

  • Sep. 9th, 2009 at 12:39 PM

Yesterday I wanted to get something for the loft, so I asked my dad if he could go up. I've never been able to get up there before; I can get up the ladder, but could never figure out how to transfer myself from the step the loft without falling. Well yesterday, I was determined to finally get in there, so without a second thought I climbed up the ladder and before I knew it, I was sitting in the loft. It seemed really simple and easy, despite the fact that I'd struggled to get in there for years. Yay, I'm so proud of me. You have to be rather careful where you step in the loft though because there aren't really any floorboards, just planks that my dad put down. One wrong step and your going to go through the floor and into bedroom ceiling.

The other day I was doing a sort out of my mum's videos; she has several doubles because she buys them, forgets she has them and then buys them again. So after getting a big collection of doubles and unwanted videos together, I made my way into town to take them to the charity shop. I only took half of them because there were far too many for me to take all at once. When I was in the charity shop I had a surprise find. Tere was a guitar; I looked at the price and it was only £15. It was a bit battered, but it worked perfectly, so I bought it. When I took it to the till, the woman asked with surprise 'are you buying that?' What kind of stupid question is that? No I'm just taking it up to the till to confuse you *headdesk*.

I have absolutely no idea how to play the guitar - or any other instrument for that matter - I can't even read musical notes, but I thought it was a good deal and I like the sound of guitars, so it might be fun just to have a play on it every now then.

Writer's Block: Finders keepers?

If you found a $100 at the library, would you pocket it or turn it in? What about at a diner or pub? Confess!

View 1038 Answers

A $100 wouldn't be much use to me as I use £ - guess I could always get it changed at the bank though. But that's not really the point of the question, is it? I say finder's keepers - if no one was looking when I took it that is. Would feel uncomfortable if someone was watching me.
